हे मूळचे सिंधुदुर्ग जिल्ह्यातील मालवणचे राहणारे असून यांचे इंटरपर्यंतचे शिक्षण जुनागड येथे झाले. १९१८ साली हे मुंबईच्या एल्फिन्स्टन महाविद्यालयामधून संस्कृत, इंग्लिश घेऊन पहिल्या वर्गात एम.ए. उत्तीर्ण झाले. त्यांना बी.ए.च्या परीक्षेत भाऊ दाजी प्राइज व गंगादास कालिदास शिष्यवृत्ती मिळाली होती. पुढे एल्फिन्स्टन महाविद्यालयात हे दक्षिणाफेलो होते. एम.ए.च्या परीक्षेत त्यांना चॅन्सेलर्स मेडल, भगवानदास पुरुषोत्तमदास आणि सर लॉरेन्स जेकिन्स शिष्यवृत्त्या मिळाल्या. पुढे त्यांना स्प्रिंजर रिसर्च शिष्यवृत्ती व भगवानदास मूळजी प्राइज मिळाले. सन १९१९ पासून काही काळ हे एल्फिन्स्टन महाविद्यालयात संस्कृतचे प्राध्यापक होते. सन १९१९ पासून १९२०पर्यंत त्यांनी युनिव्हर्सिटी स्कूलमध्ये समाजशास्त्राचा अभ्यास केला, तसेच विद्यापीठाची शिष्यवृत्ती मिळाल्यामुळे ते अधिक अभ्यासाकरता इंग्लंडला गेले. १९२०-१९२३ या काळात लंडन येथील स्कूल ऑफ इकॉनॉमिक्स व केंब्रिज येथे अध्ययन केल्यानंतर ते केंब्रिजमधून पीएच.डी. झाले. सन १९२३ पूर्वीच्या गव्हर्नमेंट सबॉर्डिनेट सर्व्हिसचा त्यांनी राजीनामा दिला. त्यांना एक वर्ष मुंबई विद्यापीठाची खास शिष्यवृत्ती मिळाली होती. सन १९२४पासून मुंबई विद्यापीठाने त्यांची ‘रीडर इन सोशिऑलॉजी’ म्हणून नेमणूक केली. यांची कित्येक ग्रंथपरीक्षणे ‘सर्व्हंट ऑफ इंडिया’, ‘सोशल सर्व्हिस क्वार्टली’, ‘जर्नल ऑफ दि बाँबे ब्रँच ऑफ दि रॉयल एशियाटिक सोसायटी’, ‘करंट सायन्स व जर्नल ऑफ दि युनिव्हर्सिटी ऑफ बाँबे’ यांत प्रसिद्ध झाली आहेत. याशिवाय लंडन, व्हिएन्ना येथील सोशिऑलॉजिकल व मॅन इन इंडिया या पत्रांत त्यांचे लेख प्रसिद्ध झाले आहेत. यांचे संशोधनात्मक लेखन सतत चालू असते.

यांचे संशोधनात्मक लेखन अगदी नवे आणि जगातील त्या शास्त्रावर लिहिलेल्या ग्रंथांचा विचार लक्षात घेऊन लिहिलेले असल्यामुळे मौलिक असते. यांच्या काही लेखांची यादी पुढे दिली आहे.
